There is one thing that I won't miss in my old house, the sound of the smoke detector going off for no apparent reason. It seems that the stupid things would go off for no reason, other than to annoy me and it worked too.
One night dh was working, I had just put the kids to bed and they were sleeping, and all of a sudden they go off. Now this wasn't the first time this had happened to I went through the house trying to see if they were going off for a reason or not. Couldn't find anything. They were still going off, luckily the kids didn't wake up, however I couldn't get them to stop. I eventually woke the kids up and put them in the living room, just in case we had to make a speedy exit while I tried changing the batteries. We had interconnected detectors which can be really great if they aren't going off for no reason. I tried changing batteries and they still wouldn't stop. I ended up putting the kids and the one dog into the car, the other one wouldn't leave the back yard and drove around for about 20 minutes until dh got home.
He came home and couldn't figure it out either. We ended up just disconnecting them for the night. We had other detectors up already just as in case ones, so we weren't going without.
This came to mind cause as I was sitting here catching up on some groups I'm in I heard a detector go off. I knew it couldn't be anyting cause dh didn't come running. Here he was finally installing our new ones that we bought before we moved over a month ago and he was testing it.
That's just one sound a person never wants to hear for real.

We do not have hard-wired detectors. We have a LOT of battery powered ones. B went on a frenzy installing them one day years ago. Do you know those rotten things ALWAYS seem to run low on batteries at 2am. That incessant little chirping beep waking you from a deep sleep. Ugh. You're right. Never want to hear it for real!
Oh yeah, I HATE the smoke detectors going off! This August I had all seven in my house go off in the middle of the night. Not at one time, but I would get one fixed, then the next one would start. Crazy! All their batteries had gone as the same time. Glad you guys were ok and got it stopped!
